Just weeks after the Minister of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture, Tumiso Rakgare, announced plans to host a four-nations arts festival, preparations for the event are already in full swing.

The organisers have announced that the festival known as Electronic Dance Music (EDM) will be held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe from April 26-28.

The event will see some of the biggest stars sharing the stage in one of the world's best tourism hotspots. According to information from the festival's Facebook page, well-known stars such as Ocean, J-Splif and Alligator will feature during the three-day event. Three-day tickets which are limited are already on sale at US$129 (approximately P1,753) each per person. The package includes access to three days concerts, performances by local and international artists, access to stages at two different venues and free shuttle bus on April 26.

One day ticket costs US$49 (approximately P665) while a two-day ticket is US$89 (approximately P1,209) per person. When updating Parliament on the status of the NACB recently, Rakgare said the NACB is working with other Arts Councils to collaborate and partner with each other for the socio-economic wellbeing of artists in these countries. Rakagre said the NACB was launched in May 2023 as part of government’s initiative to transform the local creative and cultural space. He said following the meeting in Zambia last year, the Arts Councils are working on a concept that would see this festival held on a rotational basis. “This Arts Festival will be held at the confluence of the Zambezi River, where the countries of Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia share a waterbody/border.

The initial proposal to hold a four-nation festival had been conceived during a visit by the National Arts Council of Botswana to Zambia. This festival will celebrate and preserve the four nation’s shared arts and cultural heritage,” Rakgare said. “It would be an opportunity to exhibit the potential that the creative economies of the four countries have and promote tourism due to the proximity and the various synergies.

The people have spoken

In fact, early election results in some areas across the country, speak to large voter turnout which suggests that voters crowded at polling stations to decide appropriately. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) revealed that 80% of the 1,037,684 people who had registered to vote turned up to exercise their right. It’s unfortunate that at the time of cobbling this editorial comment, results had just started trickling in.
