The Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) president, Phemelo 'Fresh Les' Lesokwane has rebuffed his suspension, labelling it bogus.

Lesokwane was suspended last week following a resolution by the BOMU national executive meeting. But the president says the whole thing is just a fuss. In a letter dated February 11, 2025 from the secretary-general of BOMU, Rasina Rasina, it states that the executive committee made a consensus decision to suspend Lesokwane. “As the BOMU national executive committee meeting held today at BOMU head office, a meeting you attended and were excused, a resolution was made to suspend you effective immediately,” wrote Rasina. As per the letter, grounds for the suspension of BOMU president emanate from blocking payment from sponsors. “The suspension emanates from a letter you wrote to the Department of Broadcasting Services purposing to be representing BOMU and unprocedurally instructing DBS to suspend payments relating to BOMU projects and its service provider,” Rasina stated. However, Leskowane has described his suspension as nothing but bogus. He says there was no fairness in how matters were dealt with leading to the ordeal.

He stated that he is puzzled by the developments as he says he was only demanding transparency from the consultant. Lesokwane stated that he is undeterred by the suspension and emphasised that it is illegitimate. “This unlawful suspension is null and void because the committee does not have the powers to suspend me as the president because we have a constitution that we work with and should follow,” Lesokwane said. He labelled the suspension as just a malicious act by the committee. “This suspension is not fair at all because I don’t see the problem as a leader and accounting officer of the organisation to ask your consultant who has been engaged to do projects for BOMU to account and tell us how money is used, to be a problem,” argued Lesokwane.

It is a warning flare to every Motswana who logs onto social media. As a country, we have reached a point where the line between robust debate and outright destruction has become dangerously blurred. At face value, Mabeo’s response, which seeks an apology and threat of a defamation suit, might seem severe to some. But we cannot ignore the context. The comment in question did not offer a policy critique or question a political decision.It...
