Under the Morula tree

As the smouldering ambers of the public workers strike are steadily smothered by the falling leaves of the Morula tree at the Gaborone Secondary School grounds, it will be asked by all who found daily communion there: "What was it that happened here?"

The journalist's notes say that the strike was not an impulse that suddenly captured the imagination of the leaders of five sister unions minus TAWU and BOGOSU.

November 16 marks tee ginning of the most recent episode in the bargaining process, a step higher than periodic consultation.  Theunions hold out believing that government will make a salary adjustment for the government employees having considered the budget between June last year and February.  No adjustment is made and in March a deadlock is declared leading to the appointment of a mediator and the issuing of a certificate of failure of the bargaining process between the unions and the employer at the Department of Public Service Management.
