Glory days: operations at TNMC

The Tati area in Botswana has a long mining history. Ancient copper workings dating back to 600AD exploited gossan outcrops of the present operations.

Anglo American Corporation (AAC) first identified the copper occurrences of Selkirk and Phoenix in 1929, though the first significant work was conducted in the mid 1960’s by the Tati Territory Exploration Company (TTE). Limited trenching of the Phoenix lease located numerous gossanous horizons and follow-up work, including 17 diamond drill holes discovered bedrock mineralisation. De Beers and AAC conducted a wide spaced multi-element soil sampling survey and an airborne electromagnetic (EM) survey in the late 1960’s, which highlighted the Phoenix area and identified further anomalies to the northwest and southeast of the Phoenix area, which remained untested.

AAC subsequently explored the Phoenix and Selkirk prospects through their local subsidiary SEDGE. Detailed work including soil sampling, trench sampling, ground geophysics and diamond drilling; 115 and 117 diamond drill holes respectively were completed at these localities during a 15-month prospecting agreement which had been negotiated with TTE.
