What is at stake in the elections?

Recently a Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) insider said that today's general election are much more than just people going in and out of voting booths and the ruling party romping to another victory.

The two warring factions in the BDP have pinned their hopes on the results, hence the ruling party has a lot riding on the election. For the first time, the opposition Botswana National Front (BNF) and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) might emerge as important players in parliamentary business depending on how the factional war in the BDP pans out and their response to it.

The BDP's factional wars became worse as the elections drew closer until about a week ago when the fighting took a new turn - it went clandestine and perhaps become even more intense. President Ian Khama went to Ngami to help his besieged man Jacob Nkate who is faced with a coalition of BCP and Botswana Alliance Movement (BAM) in a constituency that the two have counted as theirs already.
