The historic industrial civil service strike that lasted eight weeks eventually spilled over to government schools as a spate of student revolts erupted, especially in the southern part of the country.

It all started at Lobatse Senior Secondary School where students posted notices around the school calling for a revolution in support of their striking teachers. In the notices, the students complained that the strike had led to a halt in their education, but the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) was offering no explanation regarding their fate.

This prompted Minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi to announce that she would address the students, asking them to put their grievances in writing in preparation for her meeting with them. However, when the day came, she was nowhere to be found.
