Madibelankwe speak about the floggings

Law and order are important in maintaining peace and stability in any society. After ascending to the throne, Kgosi Kgafela II of Bakgatla ensured that he had a strong army of men and women ready to fight social vices like disrespect of elders by youth, crime and others.

When they graduated, Kgafela outlined his intention to use regiments to keep the peace in his chiefdom.
"I believe that this regiment will show the tribe the right way. It will also help in reviving our culture and protect it. They will also help in reviving the respect that used to be accorded the chieftainship, hence I have named them Madibelankwe," he said of the male initiates.

He sanctioned the Madibelankwe to police the Kgatleng District. And indeed the group has been quite busy, implementing the chief's wishes and in the process causing controversial reactions from various sections of the society within and outside the district. As they administered speedy justice, where a suspect would be whipped instantly for a crime he was accused of, critics feel there is a miscarriage of justice by Kgafela's troops of enforcers. They have become a law unto themselves, not adhering to the due process of the law.
