Homosexuality: Batswana ba reng ka kgang e?

Mmegi Photojournalist, KAGISO ONKATSWITSE takes to the streets to find out what ordinary Batswana have to say about the homosexual debate. Here are their thoughts

Ofimile Koloi of Pilikwe, 64, finds it difficult to comment on issues of homosexuality.  He said:  “How can a man be attracted to another man or a woman to another woman? It is wrong for the same sex to be involved sexually. However, I find that as the influence of today’s life style. Clearly, it is not our culture. That is all I can say.”

Thirty-two-year-old Sladden Gagoope from Sefhophe is of the view that allowing gays and lesbians to register an association is bad for the country and its growth.  He said: “I feel it is bad for the population, ethics and morals of the society. How do you give social immorality recognition?  Should the courts give magodu (thieves) recognition so that they can also form and register an association?  I am against the idea of reinforcing the status of these people. The authorities should rather seek remedy to address the issue of the same sex. Rights should not be used to decay the morals of the society.”
