Francistown economy shrinks with TNMC closure

FRANCISTOWN: Sometime in 2002 residents of Francistown woke up to the good news that production at Tati Nickel Mining Company’s (TNMC) Phoenix pit had been increased to 3.6 million tonnes annually.

Before then the mine was producing relatively less nickel. TNMC is situated in Matsiloje village 45 kilometres in the northeastern part of Botswana near Francistown.

Usually the existence of a high scale mine is vital to the economy of its area of operation and its environs, especially cities. Mining worldwide is also rated among the best employment generators, which is why news that TNMC had increased production was a very welcome development.
