The recent spate of attacks on the Botswana Police Service officers (three brutal assaults in just one week) strikes at the very heart of our nation's safety and decency.
These incidents, as detailed by Assistant Commissioner Near Bagali, are not just attacks on individuals in uniform, but they are assaults on the rule of law that protects us all. It is time for every Motswana to stand up and say this must stop.
Hearing of officers stoned in Molepolole, stabbed in Mahalapye, and attacked with an axe in Mmathethe whilst simply performing their duty is deeply concerning and utterly unacceptable. These brave men and women step forward daily to serve and protect our communities, often facing unknown dangers. They deserve our utmost respect and support, not violence and aggression when enforcing the laws we collectively live under.
We call on all Batswana to actively demonstrate their intolerance for such cowardly acts. Respect for on-duty officers is non-negotiable. When you witness an officer attempting an arrest or performing their duty, afford them the respect their position demands. More than that, we urge citizens to assist. If you see an officer in distress, intervene safely – shout, draw attention, call for backup, or provide witness testimony. Your active support sends a powerful message that attacking those who protect us will not be tolerated by the community they serve.
To our dedicated police officers: your safety is paramount. Whilst courage is inherent to your role, we urge you to constantly prioritise your own wellbeing. Do not hesitate to call for immediate backup when a situation escalates or feels potentially violent. Trust your training and instincts. We rely on you to return home safely after your shift.
Furthermore, the Botswana Police Service leadership must critically examine these incidents. It is vital to ensure officers are properly assigned and equipped for the risks inherent in different situations, especially when dealing with known violent suspects or incidents involving weapons or intoxication. Robust risk assessment before deployment and ensuring adequate, timely backup are crucial components of officer safety. The BPS must continuously review and strengthen protocols to protect those on the front line.
We echo Assistant Commissioner Bagali’s appreciation for the invaluable work of community neighbourhood watches and public collaboration. This partnership is our strongest weapon against crime. Let us now extend that partnership to fiercely protect our protectors. Respect the uniform, assist officers in need, demand the highest standards of safety protocols, and show zero-tolerance for attacks. Only together can we ensure a safe Botswana for all.
