Forest resources regulation must strike a balance

In yesterday's edition, we carried a story about government's new move to strictly regulate the harvesting of forest resources such as Phane. The Ministry of Wildlife has published a Bill that would regulate harvesting of veldt products.

There is no question that we need to protect the environment from over-exploitation by unscrupulous individuals, especially business people who have no environmental concerns.

The world has become more and more aware of environmental issues and most importantly, how human activities affect the environment. The Botswana environment is one of the most fragile, given the fact that we have scant rain and are susceptible to drought. Our environment therefore deserves to be treated with great care, whether in our private endeavours or commercial enterprises. However, we also know that most of our people in the rural areas especially depend on the environment for their livelihood.
