Al-Bashir should be delivered to the ICC

It is refreshing to learn that the government of Botswana has refused to be subdued by peer pressure to abandon principle.

At the on-going African Union summit in Uganda most African heads of state wanted the union to take one common position and disregard a warrant of arrest that has been issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Sudanese leader Omar Al-Bashir.  In our view it is wrong for African leaders to establish the ICC and then not allow the same court to freely carry out the mandate for which it has been established.

Mankind has spoken against heartless leaders who use their positions and state institutions to persecute and eliminate those they view as enemies.  Africa, more than many parts of the world, bears the scars of communities including women and children who have been exterminated by people in leadership.  Unfortunately such wanton terror has been visited on defenceless people by leaders who know very well that nothing will ever happen to them as they devise a quilt of laws to insulate them from prosecution. We all know of the human tragedy that decimated Rwanda, the human holocaust in Somalia, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Darfur and Nothern Uganda. Outside Africa the mass killings in Iraq, Bosnia, Palestine were some of the areas that screamed out to the human conscience for action.
