Young, ambitious and talented Motswana designer, Trudy Bakwena from Mahalapye, has set her eyes on becoming one of the country’s most innovative designers in the fashion industry. Her passion for fashion started when she was young and this led to her setting up Tru'DCreationz, a fashion brand that specialises in making clothing garments and bags from leather.

She told BusinessMonitor that what sets her business apart from the rest of other fashion brands is commitment to sustainability and zero-waste techniques in the design process. Bakwena also elaborated that they recycle and reuse fabric off-cuts to create beautiful garments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally friendly. “My journey into the world of fashion started at a young age, inspired by my grandmother who taught me how to sew,” she explained. “Despite facing challenges like the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, I persevered and started my own business, fuelled by my passion for creativity and innovation,” she added. According to the young entrepreneur, travelling, meeting new people and constantly learning, are essential tools for personal and professional growth.

She is, therefore, determined to become one of the most innovative designers in the fashion industry. Bakwena envisions herself expanding her enterprise beyond Botswana’ orders where she wants to showcase not only her designs but also those of other local designers. In the process, she hopes to create employment opportunities for thousands of Batswana and to inspire and support young aspiring designers by providing them with the skills they need to succeed in the industry. In addition to her business goals, the designer is committed to giving back to the community and raising awareness about social issues through seasonal fashion shows. These events will not only showcase the creativity and talent of local designers but also serve as a platform for social responsibility and community engagement. Looking back, business has not been a bed of roses as the journey faced several hurdles, which to her were surmountable. Despite facing challenges such as difficult customer’s payments and technical issues, Bakwena views these obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning.
