Taxi Fares Add To Annual Inflation

The year-on-year national inflation rate for the month of September edged up slightly from 6.7 percent to 7 percent largely due to the transport index, which recorded increases on two fronts.

Data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) over the weekend shows that the general increases in vehicle prices commuter transport fares in September pulled up the annual inflation figure.

"Only two group indices recorded a change of at least 1.0 percent between August and September - Transport (1.6 percent) and Clothing & Footwear (1.2 percent)," says a CSO statement. "The Transport group index registered an increase of 1.6 percent, from 129.6 to 131.6, between the two periods. This was largely due to an increase in the constituent section indices of Transport Services and Purchase of Vehicles, which rose by 5.9 and 2.5 percent respectively.
