SACU meets to deliberate on future direction

JOHANNESBURG - The Southern Africa Customs Union (Sacu) heads of State and governments will meet in South Africa this week to "reposition Sacu as a vehicle for deeper economic integration", after discord emerged among the five member states in April.

The aim of the summit on July 15 and July 16 would be to deliberate on the future strategic direction of Sacu, whose member states comprise Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland.

In April, South African President Jacob Zuma said that the future of the customs union was "undoubtedly in question", if it could not operate as a "unified group".
