Power tariffs fuel inflation

Fuelled by the electricity tariff hike effected at the beginning of last month, the annual inflation rate for the month of May pushed further out of the Bank of Botswana's objective range, rising to 7.8 percent from 7.1 percent in April.

Figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) this week show that the group index that includes Housing, Water & Electricity was the highest climber for the month due to the average 30 percent power tariff increase.

"Three group indices, Housing, Water & Electricity (3.7 percent); Alcohol & Tobacco (1.4 percent) and Restaurants & Hotels (1.1 percent) recorded changes of at least 1.0 percent between April and May," says a CSO statement.
