Lorato Mphato is one of the few Batswana who have carved a successful path in the travel and tour business.
With a background in aviation, Mphato took a leap of faith in 2008 and ventured into a then-nascent industry. Determined to equip herself with the necessary skills, she enrolled in a travel agency school in Canada, where she balanced work and studies. "I was schooling and working at the same time. I worked at Flight Centre Canada. Upon completing my studies, I focused fully on building my business. The market was good as people there are always travelling," she said. Following her success in Canada, Mphato expanded her business by opening a branch in Botswana. After five years abroad, she returned home to tap into the growing local market. Despite the challenges of a developing industry, she found her footing by offering corporate travel packages, including staff retreats.
Today her company, African Lora, caters to destinations around the world. She acknowledges that the local market is relatively small, but referrals have helped expand her reach globally. "I still have loyal clients from Canada who prefer my services. I continue to curate travel packages for them to their destinations of choice." Mphato explained that package creation is budget-driven and customised to client needs. She noted a shift in travel trends post-COVID-19, with increased demand from locals seeking opportunities in the United Kingdom and students heading to China. To stay ahead of competitors, she emphasised the importance of building lasting relationships with clients. However, she admitted the rise of online booking platforms poses a significant challenge.
"Locals should support homegrown travel agencies. When you book through platforms like Booking.com, you’re empowering an international company. Supporting local agencies means investing in our economy and helping reduce unemployment," she said. Currently, Mphato is preparing to collaborate with Air Botswana in a new initiative aimed at promoting travel to Durban, South Africa and showcasing Botswana’s rich culture.
