Gov’t pours P150m into SOE ‘sinkhole’

The Ministry of Finance plans to spend P150 million more on state-owned entities in the upcoming financial year, including millions more in fresh bailouts for organisations such as Air Botswana and the National Development Bank.

The latest details are contained in draft estimates of expenditure released by the ministry as part of the 2025–2026 budget. The estimates will be confirmed when the Appropriation Bill is passed by Parliament.

According to the draft estimates, the government wants to give Air Botswana additional support of P65 million in the upcoming financial year, over and above an extra P569 million granted in the 2024–2025 financial year.

We have all seen the pictures and heard the stories of broken windows, unreliable water and electricity, topped by classrooms that are not fit for proper learning. The establishment of the Education Infrastructure and Management Company Ltd (EIMC) signals that authorities are finally ready to take this problem seriously.
