Government revives ostrich farming

SELEBI-PHIKWE:The Department of Animal Production is reviving ostrich farming in the country through a programme called the Ostrich out-grower Scheme. The Director of the Department of Animal Production Lesitamang Paya said there have been many complaints that ostrich farming has been abandoned . He said stakeholders in the industry, Botswana Ostrich Company, the Botswana Ostrich Farmers Association and the ministry agreed on the production of ostrich, hence the establishment of the Dibete Ostrich Multiplication Unit.

Paya noted that since there were no facilities, stakeholders agreed on outsourcing the scheme that involves hatching and staff training on handling eggs. Because the ministry wants to resuscitate the industry, it found it prudent to start with existing and established farmers. However, the ministry is not preventing other people.
