Emerging ecomies urged to harness Chinese consumerism

Emerging markets have been urged to take advantage of China's projected household consumption growth that is likely to rise from 36 percent to 50 percent of GDP by 2025.

In a presentation on China in Africa at the Botswana Insurance Fund Management's (Bifm) Offshore Investors Conference at GICC on Tuesday, Sanlam's Investment Strategist, Alex Pestana, said sub-Saharan Africa was set to benefit as the second largest economy would continue to seek mineral resources, food and agricultural land from the region.

"In 2015, China will be the largest consumer of luxury products, and resources are mined here," Pestana said. He encouraged Botswana to start developing policies for agribusiness that was becoming an inevitable investment opportunity for the Oriental giant.
