DEBSWANA de-localises MD position

Weeks of speculation on whether Debswana will de-localise the position of Managing Director ended on Friday when the company confirmed the appointment of Canadian-born Jim Gowans to head the diamond mining giant effective January 2011.

The position, which fell vacant in controversial circumstances following the unexpected resignation of Blackie Marole, is not only one of the most lucrative MD positions in Botswana but has often also been viewed as reflection of who calls the shots between the two Debswana shareholders, De Beers and the government of Botswana.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Gowan's contract will run for a defined three-year period during which he will be focused on maximising the value of Debswana's world-class resource by optimising and improving operations and the continued development of a strong management team made up of Batswana.
