Pushing ahead: Gaolathe and Nazare at last week’s event

Continental Reinsurance Holdings’ planned listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) is putting Botswana’s ambitions to grow its financial services sector into focus, with the pan-African reinsurer linking its capital market debut to a broader strategy of regional expansion, skills development and investment in local talent.

Speaking at the group’s Evening of Appreciation in Gaborone last week, Group Managing Director Lawrence Nazare said the company’s decision to establish its holding company in Botswana reflected a commitment to deepen its roots in the country, where it has operated since 2014.

The event, attended by Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Gaolathe, came as Continental Re’s public offer remained open to investors, following an extension of the closing date to October 9. The company is scheduled to list on the BSE on October 29, subject to the applicable listing requirements. If successful, it will become the first reinsurer listed on the local bourse.

Exercise extra caution!

Unfortunately, petty thieves tend to be more vicious around this time as they also prepare for the festive season. Culturally, many Batswana go home for the holiday, and petty thieves are amongst those who go home. Burglaries, car break-ins, and attacks on unsuspecting pedestrians seem to be on the rise! That is not all, as scammers continue to take money from pensioners as well as other Batswana who may fall prey to their unscrupulous tactics....
