A World Bank economist says Botswana policymakers need to facilitate the entry of more broadband network providers so that increased competition results in the expansion of data services at lower cost to more Batswana.

Broadband is a data transmission system using fibre optic cables that has evolved from copper wire-based telephone lines to offer a wide range of frequencies at high speed.

In data communication, broadband refers to data transmission where multiple pieces of data are sent simultaneously to increase the effective rate of transmission. In Internet access, it refers to a high data rate Internet access as opposed to dial-up access.
