The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) and the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) have pledged to collaborate in clamping down on the estimated P4 billion in annual revenue being lost due to the illicit fuel trade.

The two parastatals signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Monday, with officials vowing to step up their efforts in curbing the illicit trade in fuel.

Investigations by authorities have shown that illicit and undeclared fuel is being regularly smuggled or otherwise secreted into the country, bypassing quality checks and taxes. The growing trend puts motorists at risk, cheats the budget out of revenues and unfairly squeezes the legitimate and law-abiding fuel companies.
