FRANCISTOWN: A new World Bank report, Tourism in Africa: Harnessing Tourism for Improved Growth and Livelihoods, has listed Botswana among African countries that can compete with major tourist regions in the world, if it effectively integrates tourism in its economy.

Along with Botswana, the report lists Cape Verde, Namibia, South Africa and Tanzania as countries that have high potential for tourism growth over the next five years.

It argues that many Sub Saharan African (SSA) countries are on the verge of tourism success. Countries around the world have benefitted from tourism as international global arrivals have grown. For example, from 1980 to 2000 arrivals in the Asia Pacific grew from 8 percent to 22% contributing to economic growth and improved livelihoods.
