The Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) executives have admitted that the telecom regulator has missed its target of combating cyber crimes in the country only achieving a low figure.

The CEO of the parastatal, which regulates the communications sector, Martin Mokgware, disclosed this at the launch of BOCRA’s strategy plan where he gave insights regarding the market performance of the organisation. He revealed that the institution is on the back foot in terms of combating cyber crimes alluding that they achieved only 0.63% of cyber security. “In terms of cyber security, we have not done very well the minister (Thulaganyo Segokgo, Minister of communications, knowledge and technology) I may say but we are supposed to go even up. “Our target was 70% and we managed only 0.63%,” Mokgware stated.

Cyber security is the application of technologies, processes and controls to protect systems, programmes, devices and data from cyber attacks, which are more common in Botswana as many are swindled of their hard earned money. Despite reaching only 0.63%, the figures show that BOCRA still needs to up the ante in the fight against cyber attacks to uphold cyber security in Botswana. Mokgware made a decree that BOCRA is set in upholding the country’s cyber security and suggested that there needs to be overhaul of some policies in the country. “If we can get the cyber security right, let’s get the cyber security law in place. We will hit the one.
