BMC revives Zimbabwe cattle export deal

The live cattle export deal between Zimbabwe’s Cold Storage Company (CSC) and BMC which has been on halt following the expiration of the importation permit, is expected to resume soon.

Plangt manager at the Maun abattoir Mothobi Mothobi told a press conference on Monday that 387 cattle were sent to Zimbabwe in January 2014.  Under the deal BMC exports 2,000 cattle monthly to Zimbabwe.

A total of 5,591 cattle were exported to Zimbabwe in 2013.  Mothobi said the CSC has however indicated that the Zimbabwean authorities have renewed its permit to resume the trade.  He said only cattle sourced from the Haina veld Protected Zone (A2d) will be exported to Zimbabwe. He however said there are concerns that recent drought decimated cattle in the area may lead to under supply.
