Betway firms up Botswana presence

NEW ROLE- France-Mabiletsa

Betway, one of the world’s leading online sports betting companies, has consolidated its presence in Botswana with the appointment of Michelle France-Mabiletsa as country manager, a position akin to Chief Executive Officer.

The company’s arrival comes after securing a licence from the Botswana Gambling Authority, allowing it to operate in the country. In a statement last week, Betway said the establishment in Botswana is part of its strategy to tap into emerging markets, with the country being a key addition to the growing footprint across Africa, which already includes Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa. For Botswana, the development is significant as it aligns with national goals to diversify the economy through regulated industries like gambling. France-Mabiletsa, a veteran in commercial banking with nearly 25 years of experience, is no stranger to high stakes leadership. She played a role in securing a banking licence for BancABC in Botswana and led award-winning initiatives at First National Bank Botswana.

Her professional background in retail, corporate, and investment banking, combined with her academic credentials, a Master’s degree in Science from the University of Derby, equips her to navigate the complexities of the sports betting industry in a highly regulated environment. In her first public statement as country manager, France-Mabiletsa, underscored Betway’s commitment to creating local opportunities while maintaining strict adherence to governance and ethical practices. She emphasised that the company’s entry into Botswana is not just business, but is also an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic landscape.

Betway’s arrival in Botswana is set to introduce new competition to the gambling industry while enhancing regulatory practices. The company plans to align its operations with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, focusing on job creation and responsible gambling measures. Tools to encourage safe betting will be integrated into its platform, reflecting a broader industry push toward sustainability and consumer protection. While the company has yet to announce its official launch date, the acquisition of its licence is seen as a critical step in establishing operations. Local stakeholders and regulators will closely monitor Betway’s activities as the company begins to roll out its services. Betway’s entry into Botswana not only reflects the rising interest in Africa’s growing betting market but also highlights the country’s appeal as a regulated space for international businesses. With France-Mabiletsa at the helm, Betway’s success in Botswana could set a precedent for other operators looking to expand in the region, the company said.

We duly congratulate them to have ousted the long ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) from power. Prior to taking power from the BDP, the coalition had made several election promises that are credited for influencing change and swaying the people to vote in its favour. The party had made an undertaking, which its leader and President Duma Boko consistently bellowed in his campaign trail. These undertakings were promises that Batswana would be...
