An imperial friend

We like to imagine ourselves as upright, self-sufficient creatures, striding boldly through existence on two sturdy legs of reason and resilience. This is, of course, a lie. Most of us are hobbling gently through the day, propped up by a quiet arsenal of crutches.

Some are socially acceptable.

Tea, for instance. A dignified porcelain inhalation of fortitude. “I’m not coping,” we insist, while clutching a steaming mug as though it contains the secret to stability. Coffee drinkers perform the same ritual, just faster and with more eye twitching.
