Rollers: The rise of the blue phoenix

A few weeks ago, all the accolades were rightly showered on Gaborone United (GU) following their game-changing P4 million sponsorship deal with SunBet Botswana. It was the kind of news the long-suffering football fraternity wanted to hear.

But while there was much pomp and fanfare on the red side of Gaborone, uncertainty loomed on the blue side. Township Rollers, a team that has become the enduring yardstick of the local game, found itself in football’s Intensive Care Unit.

It did not matter how much the kiss of life was applied to the ailing giant, Rollers appeared to be sliding inexorably towards the abyss. Players left in droves, while fans were understandably concerned.

The situation is exacerbated by the ruling party’s admission that some of its most important election promises remain unfulfilled. This is not the change many Batswana had expected. The UDC was elected into power on a strong promise to improve lives, create jobs, protect workers and repair public services.
