US Embassy ropes in hip hop stars to combat HIV

As the fight against HIV/AIDS intensifies, the United States Embassy in Botswana has committed close to a million Pula in an edutainment project aimed at encouraging behavioural change.

In an interview with Showbiz the embassy's deputy chief of mission Scott Hamilton said that they engaged 10 Botswana Hip hop artists like the notable Scar, Zeus and Kast to come up with a hip hop album that would carry the message of HIV/AIDS. The embassy, said Hamilton has already popped out about P700, 000 for the project.

Hamilton said that the idea is to help Botswana's ambition of being an HIV-free generation by 2016. He said that though remarkable milestones have been covered in providing treatment for HIV/AIDS, there is still a challenge in behaviour change. He said that they want to get the message across to the youth, hence they came up with the idea of packaging it (message) in a CD album.
