Drakensberg boys choir holds revellers spellbound

A true embodiment of differences seemed to produce an alluring effect, the Drakensberg Boys Choir - who were performing here by popular demand - simply set the Maitisong Hall ablaze. Hilarious, energetic, creative and very captivating were their performances that kept the revellers glued to the stage. The band, which offers music from the mountain, treated a packed Maitisong hall to a diverse musical offing - from jazz, African folk music, to gospel and many more.
This multi-racial and cultured group of boys aged between nine and 15 is amazing given the energy and enthusiasm they inject into every piece. They sweat, dance, beat the African drums to produce that rhythm that has for years made the African beat reverberate across the continent and beyond. Dressed in Afrocentric shirts, black trousers tucked in their white gumboots and a few in animal skin - they sang Shosholoza, a South African folk song that is just another Nkosi Sikeleli Afrika, and was delivered in a very good soprano, alto and similarly powerful tenor and bass. The energy as always was first class.
