'A tale of adultery and romantic despair'

The Deep Blue Sea (2011) is showing today only, at the Gaborone Film Society at 7 pm in the A/V Centre at Maru a Pula School. In this new version of the famous play from 60 years ago Rachel Weisz plays the woman torn between passion and boring stability. She earned various nominations as best actress and won a number of awards as best actress.

The Deep Blue Sea was made into a movie in 1955, when Terence Rattigan adapted his play for the screen, but not too successfully. Then, Vivien Leigh played Lady Hester Collyer, married to a successful barrister Sir William Collyer (acted in 1955 by Kenneth More), a much older and more staid person. This new and far superior version of The Deep Blue Sea has come about because the Rattigan Trust requested that Terence Davies make a movie of one of Terence Rattigan's plays and he chose this play about England in 1950, five years after the end of World War Two, but still suffering from its consequences.  Davies in 1950 was only five-years-old, yet he has managed to write a script that plumbs the essence of a nation still recovering from war and the tensions across British society at that time.  It echoes the guilt of survivors and the difficulty of gay men in a world that demands they be straight.
