FRANCISTOWN: Despite encountering problems at the annual World Music Conference (WMC) in Miami, Florida, last year, popular amputated DJ, Peter Gaetsewe says he is ready to attend the show again in the United States this year.

He says before the March 25-29 WMC, he has been booked for gigs in Miami, Chicago and New York.  DJ Bunz told Showtime over the weekend that he has managed to raise enough funds for the international DJs' Spin Off Competition and nothing would stop him from attending. The WMC pits the world's best DJs on the same stage.

Last year, the Francistown-based DJ nearly got stranded after he failed to secure accommodation in Florida. He spent 10 days at the airport, thanks to airport employees who helped him survive until he secured a return air ticket. "I would not call it a problem as such but an adversity that I had to overcome," argues the DJ, adding that this time around he has arranged everything in advance. He started participating the Miami show four years ago. He stated that he is determined for the coming competition and promise to do better this time. He said he would not quit the competition until he wins the world's best DJ title. Ali Entertainment, the company organising the event, takes care of his trip's expenses this time. His representation at Europe is good news for Botswana. He pointed out that he is glad to be performing with best DJs in the world despite having one hand. "If you have never gone there, no one would recognise you. DJ Fresh (Motswana DJ based in South Africa) is what he is today because of the WMC," reckons DJ Bunz. The show gives DJs an opportunity to mingle and make contacts.

The remarks are not isolated. They form part of a disturbing pattern of public attacks on independent institutions pillars essential to the healthy functioning of our democracy. The Judiciary, the Legislature, and now the media have all...
