The Bennet Mamelodi debate: who is fooling who

BPL CEO Mr. Bennet Mamelodi

Last week was a very interesting week indeed. It was one of those rare moments when the Botswana Football Association and the Botswana Premier League top brass put a united force and stood their ground, pronouncing that the BPL CEO is not a 'public punching back' and the media should back off and let the poor man do his job.

I was out of the country at the time and didn’t attend the press conference, but got a few highlights from my journo colleagues. I later got the opportunity to listen to a recording of the whole press conference and I must say I particularly got attracted to the constant defending and shielding of the BPL CEO Mr. Bennet Mamelodi.

When Bennet Mamelodi was hired for the CEO position, the media was awash with how unprocedural and troubled his appointment was. As usual there were denials. There were media reports that he was just hand-picked for the position. To my knowledge; but I stand to be corrected, there was never an advertisement that was put out for prospectives to apply and try their luck. Mamelodi got the plum job, while a few months earlier he had been doing business with the BPL through Pula Sports Marketing.
