Some sports codes are more equal than others

I was having a chat with friends a couple of weeks ago, after one big company handed over a cheque of P150K to the Zebras after their 4-1 drubbing at the hands of South Africa. Apparently the company had promised that they would give the Zebras some money; different amounts, for different results. Well; we all know that there was a massacre in Durban and for their troubles the Zebras got a whopping P150K. Talk about a golden handshake. Talk about rewarding mediocrity.

My dear friend who is not much into football asked me why these ‘losers’ were getting so much money when they had lost. She asked why the company couldn’t instead channel that money to a more deserving code or some development initiative. She asked why the money wasn’t instead used to reward someone or some team that had actually won or achieved something. Even though it wasn’t my place to try and explain it, I surely had a tough time trying to explain and justify why and what that reward was for.

All that being said, it is a fact that football is the sport for the masses. Anything about football often attracts interest. With football its either you are involved or affected. Without a doubt it is the most popular, most watched, most talked about, most sponsored, most controversial sport in the world. It evokes the most emotions. There is no country where football is not played, albeit at different intensities. It therefore follows that it will get the lion’s share of everything; be it support, sponsorship and even media coverage.  Anyone and everyone has to at some point talk about football. Even my mother who knows next to nothing about football often calls me to ask me about something in relation to football. Most chats I have had with my mother with regards sport were about football.  That’s the power of football.
