Whistle blowing Bill inadequate

Parliament is set to approve the Whistle Blowing Bill following an interesting debate especially by the opposition. The objective of the proposed law is to protect whistleblowers who inform primarily law enforcement agencies and or oversight institutions such as the Police, Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), intelligence agencies, Auditor General, Ombudsman and the taxman.

The Bill provides for the manner in which a person may disclose conduct adverse to the public interest; to provide for the manner of reporting and investigations of disclosures of impropriety; and the protection against victimisation of persons who make the disclosures; and to provide for related matters.

While the Bill is a welcome development, it is a little too late for some whistleblowers who have been victimised in the past.
