Dealing with authoritarianism: The opposition and the Speaker

What is happening lately in Parliament is embarrassing to say the least. The Speakership is no longer even trying to pretend that it is impartial, it has abandoned reason and there’s no iota of neutrality left on their direction of the House proceedings. It has become very authoritarian.

The Speaker recently read the Riot Act to MPs in the opposition.  On the 7th July 2016, the Speaker of the National Assembly caused the suspension of two opposition MPs for the whole week. This is pursuant to Standing Order 60.4 and 60.5.

Standing Order 60.1 to 60.3 provides for Order in the Assembly, for instance the Speaker may order a member who is grossly disorderly to immediately withdraw from the chamber for the remainder of the day.
