Corporate manslaughter at BCL: how long and how many more...

The death of four miners and injury of the other six has left many Batswana shocked and deeply saddened. Most importantly many people are asking what is wrong at BCL with regard to occupational health and safety standards. Has the mine lately become a death trap?

This tragedy must be very difficult for the families, relatives and friends as well as co-workers and comrades of the departed miners. The bereaved should be in everybody's prayers.

The mining sector, including copper and nickel mining, is the mainstay of the country's economy and everyone working in it is playing a very important role. The country has hospitals, schools, roads and bridges and other developments such as water and electricity because of the mining revenue. The deceased died in the line of duty whilst mining copper and nickel and therefore working towards the development of their country. Their untimely passing has robbed the country of productive and patriotic men who contributed immensely to the development of the country. We should salute these brave men and many more others who risk their lives everyday for their country. It is unimaginable how much the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased will miss them, they should be encouraged to draw on their strength. The nation should continue praying for the speedy recovery of the injured workers.
