Kalavango chairperson, Mmopi Chopdat Gaetshajwe, said the sponsorship has come at the right time as they are preparing for the Zone VI competition to be held in Gaborone in December. “The sponsorship will assist with players’ transport when they go for training, weekend games and travelling expenses outside Gaborone. We are also getting playing kits and tracksuits,” he said. The team's captain and longest-serving player, Monica Alfred, said it has not been easy for them to compete in the league without sponsorship. “We have players that we had to assist with funds almost every day, every weekend for them to attend games and training. Some of these players come from outside Gaborone. Just imagine how difficult it is when you do not have sponsorship. But we kept going because we believe in this club and our players believe in it. All we can say is the sponsorship is exactly what the doctor ordered,” Alfred said.
Kalavango was formed in 1978 and it is the second oldest volleyball club in the country. The women’s side has always been a force to reckon with, having won league and cup competitions in the past. The side has represented Botswana in continental competitions and has never been ranked outside the top four teams in the country. Kalavango has been a runner-up during the Mascom League and has been a bronze medallist for six years. In the ongoing Botswana Volleyball League, the women’s side is placed sixth after six games with three wins and three losses. The men’s side is in position nine after five matches, recording three wins and two losses.
