Pointing out problems: Nkutlwisang PIC: KENNEDY RAMOKONE

The Mares are back home after a disastrous trip to Tanzania, where they lost 6-0 to the Twiga Stars to crash out of the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers.

It was one of the Mares’ heaviest defeats in recent years, despite the team having reached successive Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals.

In the aftermath of the defeat, coach Gaolethoo ‘Ronaldo’ Nkutlwisang has hinted at deep-seated disciplinary issues within the Mares camp. In February, the team was rocked by a player protest ahead of their departure for the COSAFA Cup, hosted by South Africa. Then-coach Alex Malete was removed, whilst some senior players were dropped from camp.
