Two netball players, Cheludo David and Keletso Gontho yesterday left for Singapore where they will compete in the national league.

The two players will be in Singapore until March 25, 2025. Gontho plays for BDF Cats where she excelled in playing in different positions such as Wing Defence (WD), Goal Defence (GD) and Center (C).

She told SportMonitor before her departure that she has been invited to play for Sneakers netball team. She explained that the invitation follows her exceptional performance in the past international tournaments, such as the Deloittee national league, which she played last year. “I was part of the Botswana senior team that played in the Singapore Nations Cup in 2022. The exposure I received from these events, combined with my diligence and hard work, made it possible for me to be considered for this wonderful opportunity and I feel very grateful and proud to be on an international stage once again. I will be in Singapore for approximately a month (28 days) playing for Sneakers netball club,” she said.

Gontho is a final year student at the Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) where she is studying BA (Hons) in Entrepreneurship and Business leadership. Regarding contracts of players in the Singapore netball league, Gontho explained that six international players are recruited in the second round of the league. She said if one is lucky, they can be scouted by countries such as Malaysia. “To my fellow players, I urge them not to stop pursuing their goals, put in a lot of effort, maintain discipline, and never stop learning. Although chances like these are rare, anything is achievable with dedication and perseverance,” Gontho said.

BDF Cats coach, Kagisano Mawela, said she is happy for Gontho because that is how a player grows and gain more experience. “Gontho is a hard working player, always ready to learn and as a team captain, we expect her to go out there and enjoy herself, represent us well and learn new things,” Mawela said. Gontho has an impressive record of a gold medal: SKL Botswana Netball Association (BONA) Fast 5 Netball Cup (Maun-July 2023), Silver medal: Deloitte National League (Singapore, April-May 2024), Gold medal: Singapore Nations Cup (Singapore, December 2022), 1st position: Sri Lanka Series (Otse, Police College-July 2023) and Bronze medal: CUCSA Games (Lilongwe, Malawi, August 2022). Meanwhile, David plays for Jwaneng netball club and she has always been dangerous inside the goal circle.

She rose to stardom as a member of the Under 21 team, Dinaletsana, that participated in the Netball World Youth Cup in 2017 at the University Of Botswana (UB) Indoor Sports Centre. Standing at 1.96 meters, David has played for Wood Panthers netball side in Australia and she has been a dominant figure in local and international games. At national level she was a silver medalist at the Fast 5 netball tournament that was played in Maun in July July 2023, Gold medal (LUCARA netball league 2022), Gold medal: (LUCARA Mini league, June 2022), Gold medal: (LUCARA Netball league, 2023 and 2024); Gold medal at Spring tournament in Gaborone, November 202. David was part of the senior national team that finished in position five at the Africa Netball qualifiers that were played at the University of Pretoria in July 2022. She went on to scoop a gold medal at the Singapore Nations Cup in December 2022 and also played in the Africa Cup qualifiers in December 2023 finishing in position five. David has received several individual awards such as the LUCARA Netball best shooter (2022 and 2024). She was also the best shooter for Southern Zone in 2024.
