The Botswana Football Association's (BFA) hunt for more than P28 million to fund the Zebras' and Mares' Africa Cup of Nations campaign continues.

Both the Mares and the Zebras qualified for the AFCON finals to be held in July and December respectively. However, the cash-strapped BFA needs P28.186 million to adequately prepare the two national sides for the assignments in Morocco. The two will make their second appearance at the continental finals, with the Mares achieving the feat in successive tournaments, whilst the Zebras were last at the competition in 2012. The BFA is racing against time to raise funds, particularly with the Mares' date so close. BFA chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo said the Mares need P12, 225, 177 whilst their male counterparts are looking for P15, 961, 466.

"We have appealed and (are) still appealing to the business community to assist us," he said. The BFA recently held a golf day for corporates in a bid to raise funds for the two teams. Meanwhile, Mfolo said there is need for injection of new blood at the Mares after the team failed in its quest to qualify for a third consecutive edition. The Mares were knocked out at the first hurdle by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after coming unstuck 2-0 at home before a 0-0 draw away in Kinshasa. "We need now to have a long-term development programme for the Mares. Some of the players have reached the age of 30. As much as their experience is needed, however, the team has to be refreshed with those from the Under-20 ranks and we will need to give them time and exposure so that they reach their full potential," Mfolo said.
