The Mares will kick-start their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium next week Thursday, determined to put their best foot forward.

Head coach, Alex Malete, is under no illusions about the task ahead, stressing the importance of tactical discipline and game management. With the first leg set to be played at home, Malete has made it clear that Botswana must secure an advantage ahead of the return leg on February 26. “There is always pressure to do well because we have set the standard high and we know what is expected of us,” he told MmegiSport. The Mares have already shown their quality on the continent, having qualified for two consecutive WAFCON finals.

However, the DRC poses a different challenge altogether. One of the key concerns for Botswana is squad cohesion. Whilst local-based players have been in camp, some of the team’s international stars, including USA-based duo Esalenna Galekhutle and Masego Nfandiso, only joined recently, with others expected just three days before kick-off. The time constraints could present a hurdle, but Malete remains pragmatic. “We have recovery modalities in place to ensure they are fresh for the match and achieve peak performance,” he said. DR Congo’s style is built on high-pressing and physical duels, something Botswana must counter with composure and smart tactical adjustments. “They are a competitive and aggressive side, especially off the ball,” Malete acknowledged.

His team must find a way to dictate play, limit turnovers, and capitalise on scoring opportunities whilst keeping their defensive shape intact. The Mares have already made history by qualifying for back-to-back WAFCON tournaments, but this campaign is about proving they belong amongst Africa’s elite. The first leg will set the tone. Will Botswana rise to the challenge, or will DR Congo’s aggression unsettle their rhythm? All will be revealed when the battle begins on the pitch. The winner between the Mares and DRC will face South Africa's Banyana Banyana for a place in the finals, which will be held in Morocco for a third consecutive time.

Morwaeng’s rants: Leaders must listen

Kabo Morwaeng, a senior BDP figure known for always defending the President and also sent to do some shocking stuff in his capacity as a Minister, has defended the former Cabinet against claims it failed to advise ex-president Mokgweetsi Masisi, contributing to the party’s defeat. While he insists Cabinet discussions are “secret” and that the President holds “enormous power,” his defence misses a crucial point: Batswana deserve leaders...
