The Botswana Swimming Sport Association (BSSA), in collaboration with the Africa Aquatics Zone IV (Southern Africa), is proud to announce that Botswana has been selected to host the 2026 ZONE IV Aquatic Championships.
The prestigious regional event will take place in September 2026, bringing together the finest aquatic athletes from more than 13 SADC nations. Expected to attract over 300 elite swimmers, 70+ officials, and hundreds of supporters, the Championships mark a significant milestone for Botswana as it continues to position itself as a leading hub for regional sports tourism and international events. The hosting of the 2026 Championships is anticipated to stimulate Botswana’s sports tourism sector, drawing athletes, families, fans, and media from across Southern Africa. The influx of visitors will benefit local hotels, transport providers, restaurants, retailers, and tourism operators, reinforcing Botswana’s reputation for warmth, hospitality, and seamless event delivery. “This Championship is more than just a sporting event, it is an economic driver and an opportunity to showcase Destination Botswana,” said the Local Organising Committee.
The announcement comes at a time when Botswana continues to shine as a capable, safe, and efficient host of regional and continental events across sporting codes. Hosting the Championships also aligns with Botswana’s growing ambition to develop world-class athletes and expand competitive opportunities for the nation’s youth. The Championships will take place during a historic year, as Botswana celebrates its 60th anniversary of independence in 2026. This offers a unique opportunity to infuse the event with a sense of national pride and unity. “Welcoming the region to Botswana during our 60th anniversary is symbolic. It represents the strides we have made as a nation and our commitment to uplifting youth, promoting sport, and strengthening regional ties,” said BSSA President Kgaotsang Matthews.
As preparations intensify, the Local Organising Committee is inviting the corporate sector, development partners, and hospitality and tourism stakeholders to partner with Botswana in delivering an unforgettable championship. “This event belongs to all of Botswana,” the Committee emphasized. “We call on companies, brands, and institutions to join us in hosting a world-class competition that will inspire young athletes, boost our economy, and extend Botswana’s warm spirit to the region.” The 2026 ZONE IV Aquatic Championships promise more than medals, they offer a platform for cultural exchange, friendship, and unity among Southern African nations. As Botswana prepares to welcome the region, the nation stands ready to showcase exceptional organisation, world-class hospitality, and the unwavering spirit of Botho, all while celebrating six decades of independence and progress.
