The Botswana Football League (BFL) board will decide the future of its chief executive, Bennett Mamelodi whose contract expires in three months.

Mamelodi's term was extended by a year upon its expiry last year, and now the board will decide if he stays or goes. The BFL chairperson, Peter Kesitilwe, said the position will be advertised and only after the due process will a decision be made. "Mr Bennett Mamelodi's contract as chief executive of the Botswana Football League is set to conclude in August. In accordance with corporate governance principles and a resolution of the BFL board, the position of CEO will be advertised upon the expiry of his contract," Kesitilwe said. "The decision is part of the board's commitment to transparency, good governance, and ensuring open competition for leadership roles. It is important to emphasise that the appointment of the BFL CEO is a collective decision of the entire board, not that of the chairman acting alone," he added. Kesitilwe, who was voted as board chairperson last year, said they acknowledge Mamelodi's contributions and the operational strides made under his leadership. "The decision to open the position for competitive recruitment reflects the board's long-term vision of building a stronger, professional football league that serves all stakeholders," he said.

Kesitilwe added that Mamelodi has submitted his report on the 2024-2025 season, which concludes next month with the Orange FA Cup final. "Mr Mamelodi has submitted a comprehensive report on the 2024-2025 season to the BFA NEC, highlighting strategic progress under his leadership," he said. Amongst achievements highlighted are the competitiveness of the league, with a close race at the top featuring Jwaneng Galaxy and Gaborone United tied on 57 points. TAFIC is two adrift while Sua Flamingoes are on 52 points. Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Township Rollers, who still retain outside chances of winning the title, are on 50 points each. "This tight race underscores strong club performances and effective league administration this season," Kesitilwe said. In addition, the BFL has commenced drawing up betting regulations for the local league. "This will regulate the involvement of players, coaches, referees, and officials in betting activities, reinforcing the league's integrity and public confidence." Kesitilwe said Mamelodi has also made operational enhancements, which have seen improvements in match-day administration, club licensing compliance, and stakeholder engagement. "The use of digital systems for fixture scheduling and results reporting has improved efficiency and transparency," he said.

Gov't must empower DCEC urgently

As the new Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government takes charge, it must act decisively to equip the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) with the tools, laws, and resources needed to combat graft. The time for half-measures is over. DCEC Director-General, Botlhale Makgekgenene’s, recent address to the Public Accounts Committee paints a stark picture. Over five years, leadership instability, chronic underfunding and weak...
