Young Zebras off to Singapore

A team of players from the national Under-20 and Under-17 soccer sides left yesterday for Singapore to take part in a three-nation invitational tournament. Besides the hosts, the other nation in the competition is Malaysia.

Originally, the Under-23 side was invited to the event but Botswana could not raise a team because of the ongoing Premier League games.

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) then used the opportunity to send players from the Under-20 and Under-17 teams to get international exposure. The BFA believes the competition will be good for the youngsters and foreign scouts may show interest in them. BFA chief executive officer, Tosh Kgotlele said they are not out to win the tournament but to give the players a chance to get exposure. The team coach, Odirile Matlhaku said that he has confidence in the players and he expects good results. He said even though they are from different teams, the players have adapted well as they know each other from previous games. He said the team has been in and out of training to prepare for the event.
