SOWA: Many aspiring golfers can go a lifetime hoping to stick the pin on the 18th hole with a perfect tee shot, and it never happens. But it seemed like every young player that took a shot on the final hole did just that at the just ended annual Makgadikgadi Golf Open in Sowa.

The tournament featured 63 amateur golfers from across the country. And the young golfers have proved their mettle. Leroy Pearmain (17) and his counterpart David Masole (22), were crowned first and second overall winners respectively.  Pearmain was crowned the overall winner of the tournament after posting a 142 in the 36-hole tournament. On the other hand, Masole posted a total of 145.  An excited Pearmain described the Sowa Golf Course as "one of the most difficult courses" where it is not always easy to win."It is a combination of the difficult course and competition posed by other golfers especially the seasoned ones," said Pearmain of Selebi-Phikwe.

The teenage golfer, who is expected to sit for his Form V examinations at the end of the year, said competition varies in every tournament. He said the Sowa Golf Course is a very sandy course and not an easy one to take a tee and place the ball where one is aiming. "You need more knowledge and skill to prevail on a difficult course like this one," said Pearmain. Masole concurred with Pearmain. He said emerging second in a difficult course is a motivating factor on its own. Pearmain and Masole said their weekend achievements would spur their confidence ahead of future international tournaments.Young golfers are expected to join their counterparts at the forthcoming All Africa Junior tournament.Simon Ramphethu, the Botswana Golf Union (BGU) president, expressed excitement at the way young golfers have been performing of late. Ramphethu said youth is the base of any organisation.
