World Cup dreams in tatters

Botswana's dreams of taking part in the women Volleyball World Cup in 2010 have crumbled after the end of the Pool A qualifiers in Nigeria. The national women volleyball squad returned home empty-handed after finishing last in the four-nation qualifiers.

The team finished the tournament without a win. The technical crew, led by Carlos Orta acknowledged before leaving for Nigeria that it was going to be an uphill task to qualify for the next stage. Pitted against continental powerhouses, Cameroon, Senegal and Nigeria, Botswana was always going to struggle.

Unbeaten Cameroon and Senegal sailed through to the third round of the qualifiers. Two berths have been reserved for African countries at next year's World Cup in Italy.
