World chess champion arrives

World chess champion, Viswanathan Anand of India will face Botswana's top 30 players in simultaneous games in Gaborone on Sunday, the organisers of his visit have said. Initially, Anand was scheduled to play only college students.

But with the coming in of Botswana Chess Federation (BCF), more events like the games with 30 top players have been included in his programme. The Grand Master (GM) is expected to arrive today when the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) college, the main sponsors of his visit to Botswana will host a dinner for him. Tomorrow, BCF will host a similar event in his honour. He will also play 40 students chosen from government and private colleges. Anand is in Botswana at the invitation of NIIT. The Indian is a NIIT brand chess ambassador. During his three-day visit, he will interact with the chess community in Botswana.

BCF secretary general, Kenneth Boikhutshwane said Anand's visit is a rare opportunity to host a world champion not only in chess but sports in general. He said it is an honour to share a table with a world champion.
